C 1 rrri# 1 r._ _
EUGENE MINI _ ■ aril 'A 'lh/AMIN MI Writ ■ Illirlfr/ Wig// t
November 14, 2002
CONTACT:
• Carrie Peterson, Park Development Coordinator, Parks and Open Space Planning, 682-4907
• Andrea Riner, Parks, Recreation and Open Space Comprehensive Plan Project Manager, 682-
4909
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CITY SEEKS INPUT ABOUT PARKS AND RECREATION AT
COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE NEXT WEEK
The City of Eugene is holding an open house on Wednesday, November 20, from 4-7 p.m., at
the Hilyard Community Center in Eugene, for community members to offer their ideas about Eugene's
parks, open space and recreation programs.
Eugene's Parks and Open Space Division and the Library, Recreation and Cultural Services
Department are developing a comprehensive plan for parks, recreation programs and open space. To
ensure that the plan reflects the community's diverse needs, the City wants to hear from Eugene
residents of all ages, abilities, and interests—from bird-watchers to skateboarders, from West Eugene
to South Hills residents, from school children to retirees, and from rhododendron enthusiasts to
endangered species advocates.
"We want residents to play an active role iii how parks and recreation services are provided in
the future," says Parks and Open Space Planning Manager Andrea Riner. "We need to listen to
residents to really know what the community wants and needs."
The current plan, created in 1989, is now outdated. The new plan will build upon current
planning efforts, providing a vision for facilities and services, as well as practical steps for achieving
that vision.
The open house is one of several opportunities residents will have to provide input in the next
year and a half. The open house will be followed by a community survey. Mayor Jim Torrey has
appointed an advisory committee to work with an interdisciplinary committee of City staff to help guide
the process. For more information, call 682-4907.
###
