Even so, it is often difficult for people to take
time from their work, school, family and other obligations for jury service. Eugene Municipal Court has been working to
streamline the jury process over the past few years, and has just taken another step to make jury duty easier for potential
'urors. In 1999, the court implemented a one day/one trial term for jury duty. Instead of having a pool of potential jurors
--stand by for a two-week period, jurors now serve for only one day, or possibly two days if a trial takes longer. Each
month, all potential jurors, over 200 people, have also been required to attend a half-hour orientation session. Beginning
in September 2002, a separate trip to City Hall will no longer be needed. Jurors called for a particular day will see a
video orientation before going into the courtroom. The new orientation video was produced by Metro TV, and stars
Associate Judge Donald Loomis. Other changes the court has made to improve the jury process have included a parking
map on the summons, security procedures for late juries, a juror fee donation program, and accessibility improvements.
Future plans include having postponement and excusal requests submitted by Internet. For additional information,
contact Gabriele Glenn at 682-5442.
Construction Progresses on Two Bike Path Projects
Two area bike path projects remain on schedule for substantial k3
completion this calendar year. The final one-mile section of the 4d
East Bank Trail, from River Island Estates to the Greenway Bridge 4'
near Valley River Center, is planned for completion by the end of I
November. This long-awaited portion of the 12-mile riverbank trail - ' "'
system will include an 800-foot-long causeway along the Delta
tar j,-
Ponds which was suggested by adjacent property owners. The
causeway will offer views of the ponds and related wildlife to path
users. The 12-foot-wide path is being built of concrete and will be
lighted.
