project sponsors working in the West Eugene Wetlands approximately 11:30 am
August 6, 2002. Work projects currently include collection of native seeds
for future restoration projects, cutting and hauling ash trees, and
installing solarization patches. Current project partners include the City
-)f Eugene and The Nature Conservancy. A recent recipient of a 2002 West
ugene Wetlands Award, hosted by the Wetland Executive Team, NYC's project
and award is the result of five years effort between NYC and its WEW
partners to help area teens gain work experience, educational credit, and a
stipend while the Wetlands benefits from restoration and maintenance. NYC's
wetlands partners also include the Bureau of Land Management, US Army Corps
of Engineers, US Fish and Wildlife, and Oregon Youth Conservation Corps.
Oregon's oldest and largest youth corps program, NYC has served
approximately 6,000 teens over the past 19 years. NYC's program currently
in the Wetlands, Teens and Trails, serves 14 and 15 year olds. Teens earn
$6.75/hr for 30-hours per week for 4 weeks. Participants live in tents, cook
their own meals and work with other teens and experienced crewleaders, as
they gain responsibility, enjoy outdoor recreation, and develop important
life skills. Upcoming opportunities still available for youth this year
include NYC's YouthWorks non-residential program operating August 12-August
30, Fall program beginning September 7, and NYC's OutDoor High School
beginning September 9. The US Forest Service, Lane Workforce Partnership,
local school districts, and others also support NYC. Help youth reach their
full potential! If you would like to know more about NYC or know young
people who would like to apply for a job, visit our web-site
www.nwyouthcorps.org or call (541) 349-5055. Thank you!
2
