Final paving is scheduled to begin
in the evening on Sunday,August 10, and should be completed next week. Most of the paving will occur at night with
pavement striping and minor cleanup work to follow. The contractor should be able to complete the project a week
ahead of schedule.
ane rehabilitation project extends from Maxwell Road to Azalea Drive, and includes removing and replacing areas of
failed pavement to the full depth of the pavement ans rotomilling the entire surface to remove the top layer of the
pavement plus an additional layer of pavement in the travel lanes. Traffic detector loops were replaced in the traffic
lanes and the entire surface was repaved.
Funds for the paving rehabilitation work come from Transportation Systems Development Reimbursement fees. The
project also includes installation of a pressure line crossing, funded by Metro Wastewater fees and repair of damaged
storm drain pipes, funded by stormwater user fees. Up-to-date information about this and other Eugene area road
projects is available on the City of Eugene traffic relief hotline at 984-8484, or on the intemet at
ci.eugene.or.us/pw/traffic. Formerly Grant Park,
this small neighborhood park on Grant Street between West 9th Place and West 10th Avenue was last renovated in the
early 1980s when it was renamed to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The renovated playground sports a new play structure, swing set, sandbox, concrete wheelchair access ramp from the
sidewalk, and engineered wood chips, which will provide a safe,wheelchair-accessible surface. Children can slide down
a couple of different slides, swing on the brand new T-swing set, and climb a rock climbing structure and find the
dinosaur"fossil" in its interior and send messages to their friends via talk tubes. According to the parks maintenance
staff who have been working on the project, neighborhood children have been clamoring to start playing on the new
structures as the project nears completion. Both the new surface and playground equipment meet current safety and
accessibility standards. By popular demand, the basketball court and tile artwork created as part of a neighborhood
project remain. The Public Works Maintenance concrete crew assisted parks maintenance crews with this project by
PAGE 1
EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER 02p808.t1
August 9,200'1
