Formerly Grant Park, this small neighborhood
park on Grant Street between West 9th Place and West 10th Avenue was last renovated in the
early 1980s when it was renamed to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The renovated playground sports a new play structure, swing set, sandbox, concrete
wheelchair access ramp from the sidewalk, and engineered wood chips, which will provide a
safe, wheelchair accessible surface. Children can slide down a couple of different slides and
swing on the brand new T-swing set as well as climb a rock climbing structure and find the
dinosaur "fossil" in its interior and send messages to their friends via talk tubes. According to
the parks maintenance staff that have been working on the project, neighborhood children have
been clamoring to start playing on the new structures as the project nears completion. Both the
new surface and playground equipment meet current safety and accessibility standards. By
popular demand, the basketball court and tile artwork created as part of a neighborhood project
remain. The Public Works Maintenance concrete crew assisted parks maintenance crews with
this project by constructing the concrete access ramp and sandbox. For more information
about this renovation project, call Park Amenities Supervisor Eric Johnson at 682-4904.
###
