The City's Volunteers in Parks (VIP) program is coordinating the project. On the work agenda is construction of a park
storage facility and 1,100 feet of path, as well as clean-up of the playground, tree wells and picnic areas. VIP Coordinator
Chris Girard says, "Many hands and resources are coming together to make some significant improvements at Trainsong
ossible in one day."
Among the organizations and groups that are contributing building materials, labor, funding, lunch for the volunteers, and
other services are Home Depot, Outback Steakhouse, Cumulus Broadcasting, Blackhawk Construction, Eugene Sand and
Gravel, and Trainsong Neighbors. For more information, call VIP Coordinator Chris Girard at 682-4845.
Eugene Receives 23rd Tree City USA Growth Award
Eugene has been named a Tree City USA by The National Arbor Day Foundation for the 23rd
year. This nationally recognized award will be presented at the June 10 City Council meeting by
Robert Johnson, service forester for the Oregon Department of Forestry, who will make the
presentation to Mayor Jim Torrey. 1
Eugene is also the recipient of a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating progress in its
community forestry program through two planting projects with the Eugene Tree Foundation, TRE CTTY USA
work on an improved ordinance, and the establishment of a tree donation program at the Hays
Memorial Tree Garden. The Growth Award recognizes the environmental improvements and higher levels of tree care in
Tree City USA communities.
As part of the ceremony on Monday, Eugene will receive a Tree City USA flag. The collection of Tree City USA flags was
prominently displayed at the Public Works Day open house in May, and pictures of last year's display are included with an
article about the Tree City USA program on the City of Eugene urban forestry web site, www.ci.eugene.or.us/pw. For
more information, contact Urban Forester Mark Snyder at 682-4800.
fi'HIS WEEK
06/06 Th 4:00pm NN,SM North End Scoping Group Atrium/Sloat Room
NEXT WEEK
06/10 M 5:30pm All Council Dinner Work Session McNutt Room
06/10 M 8:00pm All Council Meeting Council Chamber
06/11 T 5:30pm NN,SM,BB Planning Commission + 3 Atrium/Sloat Room
06/12 W Noon All Council Lunch Work Session Equitable Building, One E.
