The young tree was planted in April 1999, next to the Heritage Owen
Cherry, thought by some to have been planted by Eugene Skinner. It was intended to
be the replacement for the parent tree when it fails in future years, but it has grown much
more quickly than anticipated. Its branches have already grown into the canopy of the
larger tree, and in order to avoid further damage to both trees, the young tree must be
moved.
The tree's new home will be in the landscaped island at the parking lot entrance to the
Rose Garden. Two trees, a 27-inch incense cedar and a 21-inch Port Orford cedar, will
be removed so the progeny can be transplanted. The new location will allow for the full
development of the crown of the young cherry. The move will also allow visitors to view
the parent tree from one end of the new pergola walkway and the young progeny from
the other end.
