• buring Phase One of the study, 21 tons of food discards were placed into a similar test. Pathogen levels were reduced to
below federal thresholds established for biosolids composting. This project represents one of the first to study these
feedstocks in such detail, and may have nationwide implications for the composting of food discards.
cor information, contact Alex Cuyler, Planning and Development Department, 682-6830 or alex.d.cuyler@ci.eugene.or.us.
Honor Trees at Eugene's Arbor Day Celebration
In commemoration of Arbor Week in Oregon, April 1-7, Mayor Jim Torrey, cub scouts from Den 5, Pack 357, and students
from the environmental education class of the Emerald Valley Boys and Girls Club will honor the community's commitment
to trees by planting more trees at Westmoreland Park, Saturday, April 6, at 9 a.m. The event will include remarks by
Mayor Torrey and will be followed by a work party to plant a dozen or more trees in the park and repair the fencing and
staking of last year's community planting of 100 trees at the site. Interested community members should meet at
Westmoreland Park near the Fillmore Street parking lot.
Arbor Day is America's national tree holiday, a day set aside to plant ceremonial trees, educate children about the
importance of trees and honor the important role trees play in the daily lives of people in communities across the country.
The first Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872, in Nebraska. Today, all 50 states celebrate Arbor Day and in 1970,
President Richard Nixon proclaimed the last Friday in April as National Arbor Day. In Oregon, the first full week in April has
been designated as Arbor Week.
For more information about this event, contact City of Eugene Urban Forester Mark Snyder at 682-4819 or
mark.r.snyder@ci.eugene.or.us.
Two Broadway Ash Trees to be Transplanted to Maurie Jacobs Park
In preparation for the reopening of Broadway Street, two ash trees will be excavated from their current location on
Broadway Street and replanted in their new home in Maurie Jacobs Park, along the Willamette River. City and private
karborists assessed all trees affected by the reopening project, determining that only these two trees were small enough to
earvive the extensive loss of root system associated with transplanting. The excavation is scheduled for this Friday, March
29. The trees will be stored for the evening and replanted the next morning on Saturday, March 30.
Once completed, the newly opened stretch of Broadway will be replanted with 54 trees. The City has adopted a new
design for tree planting areas. Improving the soil and size of the planting area will encourage faster growth and better
health in the new trees.
For more information about this transplanting project, contact Urban Forester Mark Snyder at 682-4819. For information
about the Broadway Opening project, contact Denny Braud in Planning and Development at 682-5536.
I THIS WEEK
Council Break: March 14-April 8, 2002
NEXT WEEK
L
UPCOMING
April
04/01 M Noon DK Housing Policy Board McNutt Room **
titte x+/08 M 5:30pm All Council Dinner Work Session McNutt Room
EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 3
March 28,2002 cc020328.wpd
