TREE SELECTION <br /> 1.0 The City will plant trees on public property that have potential for good local <br /> performance and will, over time, achieve a diversity of species for greater stability of <br /> the urban forest. The City will recommend that trees with these characteristics be <br /> used in private developments as well. <br /> The City, by practice, has been planting a diversity of trees over the past three <br /> years, with no one species being greater than 10% of the trees planted <br /> 1800+ trees planted representing over 60 species of trees <br /> City staff strongly encourages species diversity when reviewing private <br /> development plans with limited species diversity. <br /> illApproved street tree list specifies which trees do well under given local <br /> conditions. <br /> City star strongly encourages other suitable species to encourage diversity <br /> when over used species are presented as part of development plans. <br /> Sat The City needs to acquire and prefonn an inventory of street and park trees to <br /> adequately monitor tree composition and performance. <br /> 2.0 The City will plant native tree species in appropriate locations on public land and <br /> encourage their use on private lands, but not to the detriment of species diversity. <br /> Over the past 3 years 7 native species have been found and regularly used <br /> In the plans review process native trees are encouraged, when appropriate, <br /> when presented plans without the use of native trees. <br /> 6k/Approved street tree list with native trees specifies which native trees do well <br /> under given local conditions. <br /> To increase the availability of native trees, the City should use more native <br /> 1 species, thus setting an example for the public and nursery industry that these <br /> trees are a viable option. <br /> _-- 3.0 The City will encourage citizens to grow trees that produce food. <br /> Work with gleaners, the public gardeners, food bank people, and other <br /> interested parties to facilitate their involvement in developing and maintaining <br />
