For Council Newsletter:
RIPARIAN ZONE VEGETATION MANAGEMENT
Guidelines used by Maintenance Division staff for management of vegetation in
areas of City responsibility along the Willamette River are contained in the
"Willamette Greenway Management Proposal" published January 1985. It is a
document developed by a special study committee that was appointed by the
Joint Parks and Recreation Commission. The Parks and Recreation Plan adopted
by City Council specified that this study be made of the riparian zone of the
Willamette River. The proposal was not specifically adopted by City Council.
The document addresses a variety of vegetation management issues including
desirable vegetation, undesirable vegetation, visual access zones, wildlife
habitat zones and physical access zones.
Public opinion regarding the management of the vegetation along the river is
extremely varied. Some people would like us to do more extensive clearing
along the river area and bike path areas for safety purposes. Other members
of the public would like to see us perform no vegetation management at all.
The "Willamette Greenway Management Proposal" calls for practices somewhere
in between the two extremes.
A copy of the "Willamette Greenway Management Proposal" has been placed in the
Council Library for your reference in case you want additional detail.
If you have additional questions, please contact Dick Morgan or Bob Hammitt at
687 -5220.
