r
Date: 03/31/93
From: Bob Hammitt CERMLLD - RIS1
To: Kevin Hornbuckle CEEXKAH - RIS1
Subject: RIPARIAN ZONE VEGETATION MANAGEMENT
The guidelines used by the Maintenance Division for management of vegetation
in areas of City responsibilities are contained in the Willamette Greenway
Management Proposal. It is a document developed in 1985 by a citizen's group
called The Willamette Greenway Study Committee. The document was never
officially adopted by the City Council.
The document addresses a variety of vegetation management issues including
desirable vegetation, undesirable vegetation, visual access zones, wildlife
habitat zones, and physical access zones.
The problem that we have in managing vegetation along the river is that public
opinion is so varied. There are some people who would like to see us do
extensive clearing along the river bank and bike path areas for safety
purposes. There are others that would like to see us do no clearing at all.
I believe our practices are somewhere in between the two extremes.
Either Dick Morgan or I can address questions regarding vegetation management
in the riparian zone. Either of us may be contacted at 687 -5220.
