design and costs estimates. At minimum, 4J should be asked to prepare
drawings and formal costs estimates for at least one stadium before the
city makes a final decision.
4. I am not convinced that the residential neighbors have been advised
that there will be potentially tremendous public pressure by sports
groups to use the lighted facilities on a daily basis during the summer
months. Lights were considered for installation at Monroe Middle
School, but were disapproved after it was learned that the fields would
be potentially lighted late into the evening to accommodate summer
league baseball. If lighted recreation facilities are desired, then
"best" locations should be considered for these facilities rather than
allowing the siting process to default to the existing high schools.
Eugene would be much better served if the city first designed what would
be best to meet city goals and then decide how these plans might be
integrated with the athletic needs of 4J. Before any other action is
considered, the City should at least ask the district to come forward
with a single stadium / sports complex proposal and see how that pencils
out.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Jones
530 Roan Drive
Eugene, Oregon 97401 -5759
