- -- Original Message
From: Eugene PSO
Sent: Monday, August 09, 1999 8:29 AM
To: 'Kenneth Jones'
Subject: RE: Four Stadium option
Good morning Ken, I'll make sure your e-mail is distributed to the Mayor and Council prior to
their meeting tonight.
Gary Cloyes
Public Service Officer
Original Message
From: Kenneth Jones [mailto:j ones kr @efn.org]
Sent: Sunday, August 08, 1999 8:38 PM
To: pso @ci.eugene.or.us
Subject: Four Stadium option
An Open Letter to the Eugene City Council:
I urge you to examine the printed presentation to the voters in
theVoters Guide when you evaluate the use of park bond moneys to partner
with the 4J School District in the construction of the proposed four
stadiums. Please also consider the following:
1. The University of Oregon has postponed conversion to artificial turf
and will not make a final decision as to whether and when it will
convert to turf for another 2 -3 years. Continued use of Autzen Stadium
by 4J should be considered by the school district before the four
stadium option is decided.
2. Eight million dollars will not build four stadiums and meet all of
the recreational goals contained in the voters guide. Two million
dollars per stadium will not allow construction of durable facilities
and leave moneys available for a replacement sinking fund. The types of
facilities proposed, especially the installation of artificial turf,
will experience extraordinary wear and tear. Artificial turf is
fragile; it is subject to vandalism and will require expensive security
monitoring to insure its correct use. It would not be fiscally prudent
to build these facilitates without also establishing an adequate
replacement reserve.
3. The school district refuses to first provide detailed engineering
