YOUTH SPORTS PARK 09‘
CAL YOUNG MIDDLE SCHOOL
INTRODUCTORY MEETING REPORT
MAY 25, 1999
INTRODUCTION
The last in a series of initial workshops for the Youth Sports Complexes planned as part of the
Parks and Open Space bond measure program was held at Cal Young Middle School on the
evening of Tuesday, May 25 from 6:00 to 9:OOpm. The first part of the workshop consisted of
an open house from 6:00 to 7:OOpm, during which attendees could review a series of presentation
boards displaying information about the Parks and Open Space program elements, their locations
and a general time line, an outline of options for the collaborative development of the Youths
Sports Parks, a sample schedule of play times for the proposed artificial turf stadiums, an
inventory map of all current available sports facilities in the Eugene - Springfield area, and a series
of case -study plans for sports parks in other locations (designs by Cameron, McCarthy, Gilbert
LLP).
Following the open house, Brian McCarthy presented the project background and introduced
David Piercy and Christine Andersen to comment on the project and the partnership between 4J
school district and the City of Eugene respectively. Participants were then engaged in a general
discussion and small -group charette, each of which are described below.
LARGE GROUP BENEFITS DISCUSSION
Meeting participants identified the following benefits which would result from a youth sports
park in this area. It was clarified that this part of the discussion could also be used to generate
ideas that could be viewed as `goals' for the project, or issues that the project should try to
address.
Personal
• alternative recreation for individual youth
Community
• livability preserved (goal)
• safety /traffic (goal)
- traffic signal at intersection of Cal Young and Crescent
• supervision/management (goal)
- accountability
• recreation provides a place to congregate positively - a focus
• family interaction - "town square"
• meet neighbors
• multi generational
Cal Young Youth Sports Park
Introductory Meeting Page 1
