YOUTH SPORTS PARK P <br /> CHURCHILL HIGHSCHOOL/KENNEDY MIDDLE SCHOOL <br /> INTRODUCTORY MEETING REPORT <br /> MAY 15, 1999 <br /> INTRODUCTION <br /> The first in a series of initial workshops for the Youth Sports Complexes planned as part of the <br /> Parks and Open Space bond measure program was held at the Sheldon Community Center on the <br /> morning of Saturday, May 15t from 8:30 am to 12:00 noon. The first part of the workshop <br /> consisted of an open house from 8:30 am to 9:30 am, during which attendees could review a <br /> series of presentation boards displaying information about the Parks and Open Space program <br /> elements, their locations and a general time line, an outline of options for the collaborative <br /> development of the Youths Sports Parks, a sample schedule of play times for the proposed <br /> artificial turf stadiums, an inventory map of all current available sports facilities in the Eugene- <br /> Springfield area, and a series of case-study plans for sports parks in other locations (designs by <br /> Cameron, McCarthy, Gilbert LLP). <br /> Following the open house, Brian McCarthy presented the project background and introduced <br /> David Piercy and Christine Andersen to comment on the project and the partnership between 4J <br /> School District and the City of Eugene respectively. Participants were then engaged in a general <br /> discussion and small -group charette, each of which are described below. <br /> LARGE GROUP BENEFITS DISCUSSION <br /> Meeting participants identified the following benefits which would result from a youth sports <br /> park in this area: <br /> Personal <br /> • place to go <br /> • opportunities for family interaction <br /> Community /Social <br /> • strong sense of community <br /> • designated location for interests (skatepark) <br /> • numerous facilities and levels <br /> • family activities <br /> • community statement to youth <br /> • accessibility to resources (programming plan) <br /> • programming representative of provider (kidsports, etc) <br /> • increase youth participation (in sports and school with better grades) <br /> • increase interaction with youth <br /> Churchill Sports Park <br /> Introductory Meeting Page 1 <br />
