George Russell, Bill Hirsh and David Piercy have been going the rounds to gain support for the 4 field approach with the expectation that the city will be a player in that scenario. David will be calling me in the near future to schedule a meeting of our two staffs (city and 4 -J) to discuss the public involvement process necessary for the city to be involved in the projects. I believe many of the issues related to scheduling of fields and availability will be worked out in that public process. There are concerns about how late the facilities may be used in the evenings, traffic associated with types of activities, etc., so we know those will be issues. The funds we will be working from are those associated with the youth sports complex in the bond. The opportunity to have artificial turf may mean fewer fields but longer playing season and other possible trade -offs. All will need to be discussed in the public involvement process. I am assuming that Renee will continue to be our primary staff contact with LRCS on athletic field issues. So far that seems to be working well from PW vantage point - -I personally appreciate your help, Renee, in working through the field renovation and Bond Complex issues over the last few weeks! I would expect Renee to be part of the staff group meeting with 4 -J to develop the public involvement process. If there are any problems with this approach as I've described it above please let me know. It is clear that my question is too early. It is also clear that everyone has very good intentions about multiple use of any new artificial turf fields built w/ a mix of POS & 4J bonds. What I 'm trying to do is make sure those good intentions can actually be realized. Seems like the best way to test that is by looking at a hypothetical schedule for the use of the new fields. Until 4j has made the 1 vs 4 fields decision, that can't be done. Once that decision has been made, Renee I'm hopeful that you can get the info that would allow us to be assured other users will have access at usable times to these new fields. Does that seem possible to you? After all of our experience of the practical difficulties of actually scheduling the use of facilities, I don't want us to make that mistake again. The most recent example w/ the Fair Grounds was such a disaster!
