Patrice A Sanders,10 /9/00 12:30 PM - 0700,site council discussion 1
Date: Mon, 09 Oct 2000 12 :30:24 -0700
From: patrice .sanders @partners.mcd.com (Patrice A Sanders)
Subject: site council discussion
To: hegstrom@4j.tane.edu
MIME- version: 1.0
X- MIMEOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2919.6600
X- Priority: 3
X- MSMail- priority: Normal
Original- recipient: rfc822;hegstrom@4j.lane.edu
Hi Morley, My name is Patti Sanders, I have two sons @ Cal Young and I am also
on the Connections Parent council. I will not be able to attend the site council
meeting today but I wanted to voice a concern I have that hopefully can be brought
up. It has to do with the skate park. I can only assume this is not new
discussion and many other parents are concerned. From the very start of
construction, I saw the "writing on the wall ". I have restaurants close to schools
and know of the "element" that loiter around kids to sell them drugs etc. Now
with a skate park on school property we have given them a valid reason to be there.
My kids love to skate and I am pleased there are places for kids. Unfortunately this
sport attracts all ages, types of young adults. In less than two weeks my boys
confirmed my worries when I heard them talk with a friend about, "those guys who do
'drugs' at the park. They smoke marijuana all the time, they showed me some and it
was all 'lumpy' and then you should see how goofy they are doing '011ies'. " This
was the conversation they were having after I picked them up last ; week. My point
is....why did they build this on school property? How is the city, the School and
the parents planning on protecting our kids from this older generation and from
those who will now "hong out" waiting for 12,13 & 14 yr olds to go to lunch or get
out of school. I realize these skate -parks are going to be built somewhere. I just
don't believe it should have been where it is so assessable to kids throughout the
day. School hours should be some of the safest during a day. Are there 'DARE'
signs posted on the fence? Are we communicating to our children what to do, who to
call when they see drug use occurring? My boys (so far) still have an anti -drug
value instilled in them from previous educators and myself....how long will that
last when they see older kids who "skate" very well and "idolize ", doing drugs in
front of them and enticing them with them? I ask that the site council talk about
this and communicate back to parents what we all can do. What's done is done, now
let's do more. thx Patti Sanders. p.s. Thank you, Morley for the process you have,
sending home letters with positive comments about your students. You sent one last
week on my son, David. I appreciate you and your teachers taking the time
to recognize and then let parents know.
Printed for morley hegstrom <hegstrom @eug4ja.lane.edu> 1
