11/14/00 TUE 08:32 FAX 541 682 4882 CITY EUG PWMAINT " 2002
October 11, 2000
To: Mayor Jim Torrey and the City of ange planning
RECEIVED
rs
Ci) Y C ITY MANAGER
From: Andy Martin, Pastor, Harvest Community Church OCT t6 2000
Re: Skate perk boated at Cal Young Middle School
W It is the desirr! of Harvest Community hurch to be a active influence tiY po roe on the
city of Eugene and to be a meaningful contribute( to our Community. For
admittedly selfish ressons, we did not want the skate park portion of the new
`# = sports complex to be constructed directly across the street from our church. We
felt e there would be a negative and even damaging impact on our property.
Having been opposed to the construction of the skate park I want you to know
4411t that now that the park has been built and is open, our desire as a church is to
have a positive influence on the kids and families who will be using the park We
want Harvest Community Church to be a beacon of love and hope in our
community.
Mlle we will do all that we can to create out of a challenging k} g srtuatian, you
need to know that there has been, end we believe will continue to be a negative
impact on our church property,
After talking with Msyor Torrey on September 29, about my concerns, he
suggested that I put together a list of things that have been and are currently
affecting our church. You will find that list below. Incidentally, none of these
things were happening before the skate park was built.
• Spray painting (tapping) of our building.
• Skaters regularly urinate on our building. Not just in the bushes - on the
building walls, in doorways, on patios, eta
• Skaters take wood from our storage sheds to build skateboard ramps in our
parking lot, destroying the wood for future u$e and leaving shredded planks
.rL /jar :vfiu and all the pieces In the lot when they finish.
• Skaters "grind' an a memorial bench on our courtyard patio, putting gouges
dorm the entire length of the bench and scraping off the paint This was a
Kc +lr brand new bench with a memorial plaqueatteched to It In memory of a
deceased parishioner.
• Skaters daily skate end walk throw flower gardens and beds, killing plants,
breaking off sprinkler' heeds, spreading bark mulch onto sidewalks, driveways
and parking lots.
. ,rat • Skaters and parents of skaters perk their vehicles in our parking lots at all
times Of the day and night, even during our Sunday services, sometimes
forcing our church parishioners to park down the street or potentially just turn
around and go home. More and Mors, the skaters who park their cars in our
lot are harping out before and after they skate. Every day we have to pidc
up their trash, empty cares. broken bottles, cioarefte butts, used condoms,
end even underwear, strewn throughout our property, in bushes, parking lots,
r1,rine flu,., lawns, sidewalks, eta
(: III -.1v I. if LW.; i H
a
