Hammitt, Bob
From: Morgan, Dick
To: Hammitt, Bob
Subject: FW: Cameron Hutcheson/Addidas Trail
Date: Tuesday, March 15, 1994 2:20PM
From: Rhay, Tim
To: Hammitt, Bob
Cc: Morgan, Dick
Subject: Cameron Hutcheson /Addidas Trail
Date: Tuesday, March 15, 1994 7:58AM
So, you've Cameron. Hard to ignore, isn't he? He is very possessive and proprietary when it comes to the
Addidas Trail.
It would be fair to say that Cameron and I have some different ideas about what constitutes a well- maintained
jogging trail. (I believe that the Addidas Trail is probably the best such facility in the state of Oregon if not the
Pacific Northwest. He does not argue with this, but still "wants it to be better".) I did put a stop to the "blading"
that he wanted last year as it was unnecessary and could have damaged the trail. Further, we have agreed to do
it in the past as an experiment and one result has been that the trail is now wider than before and the edges have
been pushed out over the gravel base that was installed when the trail was built, creating soft areas on some of
the edges. I explained all this to Cameron, but he has "selective hearing" when it come to something he has
decided is a good idea. (No one but Cameron has ever implied that such an operation was necessary or even
beneficial and we have never done it to any other jogging trail in the City.)
We also mowed down several large patches of blackberry at the margins of the trail at Cameron's insistence to
"make the trail safer for women joggers". (No woman joggers ever requested this action but I agreed that what
he wanted was reasonable and within the bounds of appropriate vegetation control. It also released some of the
native vegetation that had been suppressed by the blackberries. Cameron wanted the understory essentially
cleared which we did not and do not wish to do, and he was not satisfied with our efforts in that we only removed
the blackberries from the outer margins of the woodland that were impacting the trail. During and following the
vegetation removal we did hear from the "Nearby Nature" group about "habitat destruction ", but we went forward
with the project because it was operationally sound.
I would expect that Cameron sees a new opportunity to push his personal vision of the Addidas Trail stemming
from consolidation. He could not talk Doug Post and Dave Pompeii into over - ruling our decisions and Dick
Morgan also "has his number", so now he will try to get what he wants through you. (If you don't agree, don't be
surprised if he seeks and appointment with Chris Andersen.)
You should understand that Cameron routinely over - states his support, claiming to speak for virtually the entire
running community. (When asked to produce evidence of his support, he can sometimes badger some officials
of running groups into writing a letter, but it is never as much as he claims.) Another tactic is to donate a modest
sum (a few hundred dollars) for trail maintenance and then attempt to dictate maintenance programs based on
that donation.
I don't mean to "beat up on" Cameron, but 1 assume you want me to be candid. He is an excellent advocate for
jogging trails, and the Addidas Trail in particular, but he simply has his own unique ideas about what is best for
that facility thaitrees not always agree with what the City feels are the best maintenance practices for the trail.
He is retired or semi - retired and has the time to advocate his ideas and is not shy about doing so.
Page 1
