BOX 902
EUGENE, OREGON 97440
12 APRIL 1999
CITY OF EUGENE, PUBLIC WORKS - MAINTENANCE
JOHNNY MEDLIN, CITY MAINTENANCE PLANNING MANAGER
TIM RHAY, PARK MAINTENANCE MANAGER
1820 ROOSEVELT BLVD.
EUGENE, OREGON 97402
RE: AMAZON PARK MEMORIAL BENCH SITING MEETING WITH NPSO, 5 MAR 99
DEAR JOHNNY AND TIM:
On behalf of the Emerald Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Oregon (NPSO) I would
like to thank you both for your attendance at our meeting at Amazon Park with Laura Todd of U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) on 5 March. We appreciated your willingness to listen and
offer constructive suggestions for resolving the bench siting issue. Tim, I know 1 spoke with you
again last week and it sounds like some progress is being made with contacting the family.
Please keep us informed as events occur on this front. We are also very interested in pursuing the
wetlands restoration as outlined in #5 below. Ed Alverson would be an excellent resource person
on this. Would he be available for consultation as a city employee? Or is there another individual
who has been assigned this responsibility? How can we facilitate movement on this issue?
Following is a brief recap of the meeting as taken from my notes:
Here's my quick take on our meeting this morning. In attendance were Gail Baker
(NPSO co- president), Charlene Simpson ( NPSO R&E co- chair), Marcia Cutler(NPSO), John
Koenig (NPSO - Conservation Chair), Laura Todd (USFWS), Johnny Medlin (City of Eugene) and
Tim Rhay (City of Eugene). Overall, I thought it was a productive meeting and that both Johnny
Medlin and Tim Rhay were fairly receptive and not too defensive regarding the bench faux pas. I
took it as a good sign that they both did listen to our concerns and seemed to be open to most of our
suggestions. Whether this translates into any actual changes or work on the part of the city
remains to be seen. Laura Todd had good input and will be updating our HCA maps.
1) Tim Rhay, Park Maintenance Manager City of Eugene will contact the family donating the
memorial bench indicating the "need" to relocate the bench to a suitable site outside the HCA area.
Emphasis on "need" not "must ". City wants to have all potential acceptable sites identified before
approaching the family so they can choose between a list of alternatives. Further discussion
between all parties resulted in selecting a site approx. 75 ft. to the east of the present site at the
