ETTER John F
From: ZZ -NLN (MSM)
To: ETTER John F
Cc: PLAMONDON Scott F
Subject: small scale project: Amazon Cr. @ Oak Patch
Date: Sunday, April 14, 1996 9:26AM
John, I have a small -scale project that I'd like to accomplish on Amazon Creek at Oak Patch. I've been
talking with a couple representatives of Jody Coyote Jewelry (Brent Cleaveland, Pres., and Jon Haakanson)
about partnering to improve Amazon Creek and the bike path in that area. The idea is to add a picnic
table here and there, a bench to sit on here and there, clean up the hazardous or unsightly rubbish, and of
course continue with the idea of developing the creek and bike path as a type of informal continuous park
corridor.
Cleaveland and Haakanson helped with the tree planting yesterday, west of their facility on Oak Patch.
They're eager to move ahead with some beautification plans in the immediate vicinity of their building. I'd
like to help do a small project that we could use as a local "demonstration project" to spur on other
business owners in that section to spruce up their parcels and the public corridor. The idea would be to
match a small private investment of time or materials with a small public investment - combining resources
to make a difference.
I think the idea has potential for catching on. Building on the momentum of this year's big project betwen
Richardson Bridge and Bailey Hill, and the A.C.E. improvements later this year, the area already has
people's attention. And ... Haakanson wants to talk to his old classmate, who operates Eugene Sign and
Awning just across the street on Oak Patch (also backing up to Amazon Creek) about particpating. We'd
be off to a good start!
Yesterday I mentioned to Hal Gausman that it would be great if he could assist for a short period, making a
site visit and giving a little thought to the best placement for a couple of trees, or shrubs and trees, to
complement the picnic tables that J.C.J. is prepared to install - probably on their property which is not
visually or physically separated from the creek r.o.w.
(I'd also like to think about putting in a few rose bushes. Ran into a constituent yesterday who's in the
local Rose Society, and I think we could get a little participation from them as well - IF that kind of shrub
would be appropriate.)
I don't think this would require much time, and could be handled much more simply than the larger
NeighborWoods projects. To start, we'd need an accurate map of property ownership and the public
r.o.w. There's a lot of asphalt paving between J.C.J. and the Creek, and his neighbor on the east has
some sort of easement for truck access.
Nancy N.
Page 1
