In response to a question from Ms. Behm, Mr. Medlin stated that the facility would be permanent.
Mr. Ernst asked if the City had lands more suitable for such a facility. Mr. Medlin replied that he
did not know of anything else that consisted of open acreage with a visual clear zone to the sides.
Ms. May commented that she found it amazing that Mr. Deal had asked for an extension on using
the facility in 1994 and had kept using it. She questioned why, with the Olympic Trials rapidly
approaching, were the athletes bringing this case forward only now. She averred that Mr. Deal
had 13 years to figure this out.
Mr. Tolbert countered that he had only been told that the athletes would not have access one
week earlier.
Ms. Hinchcliffe wished to underscore that she was a community member and did not represent
the University. She had come to Oregon because of the coaching and facility for the hammer
throw.
Cari Soong said the hammer throw facility in Alton Baker Park was the "equivalent of perfect
waves for a surfer." She declared that the facility there was perfect.
Mr. Deal stressed that the issue was independent of the University of Oregon; the athletes who
trained at the facility were post - collegiate athletes.
Mr. Sonnichsen said he had tried to call Mr. Deal but Mr. Deal had not returned his call. Mr.
Deal responded that he had felt at the time that it was not appropriate for him to respond as a
private citizen.
Mr. Sonnichsen cited minutes from the 1994 meeting that indicated that the hammer throw
facility was planned to be phased out over the next ten years. He averred that the land was now
dedicated to passive recreation. In his opinion it was a closed issue.
Mr. Bonnett thanked the representatives of the hammer throw athletes for coming and suggested
that the CPC address the item under New Business.
4. Approval of Minutes of July 12, 2007, CPC Meeting
Mr. Bonnett thanked Ms. Behm and Ms. French for their work on the minutes. He offered the
following corrections:
• Agenda item 8, last paragraph: Strike the rest of the paragraph after the vote was re-
corded.
• Agenda item 9, first paragraph: "The CPC Outreach Subcommittee has veted decided to
get involved in this effort;..."
Ms. Larison requested a change to her report on the Weed Watcher Workshop she had attended.
MINUTES— Citizen Planning Committee of the October 11, 2007 Page 3
Whilamut Natural Area
