Mr. Sonnichsen commented on the possibility of silicosis to occur with people in and near the bridge
construction area due to the large amounts of materials that would be need to be ground down as the
previous bridge was taken down.
Mr. Sonnichsen was surprised to learn that hollow girders had been used in the construction of the deck of
the previous bridge and that a surprisingly large amount of wood had been left inside the girders. He
hoped that the wood, which he noted had not seen the light of day in almost 50 years, could be removed
safely and put to some sort of use.
Mr. Sonnichsen noted that there had been various discussions during the bridge tour regarding the west
slope trees. He further noted that the CPC's letter to the Eugene City Council had been very helpful in
encouraging the Council to pass a resolution protecting those trees.
Mr. Biggs asked if Mr. Sonnichsen had had any involvement with the renaming of the Autzen bike bridge
by the Eugene City Council. Mr. Sonnichsen believed that the name change had been proposed by former
Eugene Human Rights Commission liaison Greg Rickhoff and that the proposal had been adopted with no
fonnal public discussion. Mr. Sonnichsen further believed that the Autzen bridge had been subject to the
renaming because it had never been officially recognized under its common name.
Mr. Biggs was very surprised that the Autzen bridge renaming matter had not been reviewed by the
Willamalane Park & Recreation District or the City of Eugene's Parks and Open Space department.
Mr. Bj6rklund commented he knew very little regarding the actual process by which the Autzen bridge had
been renamed. He stated that POS had been contacted regarding the matter but did not know who inside
the City organization had initiated the renaming process for the bridge.
Mr. Sonnichsen regretted that the CPC had not been contacted by POS staff since the Autzen bridge
connected to the Whilamut area.
Signage
Ms. Mello reported she planned to meet with Ms. Brand to discuss EmX signage issues that had been
mentioned in previous CPC minutes.
Outreach
Mr. Sonnichsen commented that Ms. Behan had asked him to report that she, Ms. Mello and Mr. Biggs
currently represented the CPC regarding art issues related to the Whilamut Natural Area.
Ms. Jones stated she and Ms. Behm had recently attended a BLM meeting in Eugene to discuss the West
Eugene Wetlands area.
Mr. Bj6rklund distributed additional Kalapuya Talking Stones pamphlets to the CPC members.
7. STAFF REPORTS
Eugene Parks & Open Space (POS)
Mr. Bj6rklund commented Mr. Richardson had forwarded to him a POS update request from the CPC to
staff.
Mr. Bj6rklund reported a science class from North Eugene High School planned to visit the Whilamut
MINUTES — Citizen Planning Committee October 15, 2009 Page 6
Whilamut Natural Area
