Ms. Brand said issues such as maintenance, graffiti, and cleaning needed to be considered and
Ms. Behm said that was being taken into consideration. Ms. Behm also said ODOT was
providing $100,000 for maintenance.
Ms. Behm then pointed out the North Bank on the map and said ODOT had agreed to pay for
enhancements. She said they wanted to keep the focus on the river and have sitting areas. They
were not planning to enhance it very much.
Ms. Brand said she wanted to mention again that the railings on the Knickerbocker Bridge were
the only ones that had not been fixed. She said the cost to repair it was $7,000 and said the CPC
should encourage ODOT to use some of its committed money to repair the bridge.
Ms. Behm said that was an excellent idea and there was extra money to do that.
Mr. Sonnichsen said he was in favor of fixing the footbridge but did not think there would be
money left over until after 2012. He thought Ms. Brand's point was that she wanted the
Knickerbocker Bridge repaired before the Olympic Trials.
Ms. Lamb asked if there would be places wheelchair accessible on the North Bank for people to
safely move off the path to view the river and Ms. Behm responded that that could be done.
Mr. Hyde said progress was being made on the chicanes which would deter bike traffic on the
riverside path. He said there were signs directed at bicyclists telling them to dismount.
Mr. Sonnichsen said he saw the chicanes in place last week.
Ms. Behm complimented ODOT for repainting fog lines along the canoe canal path.
c. Signage
Ms. Mello had no report on signage.
d. Outreach
No report.
8. Staff Reports
a. Eugene Parks and Open Space (POS)
Mr. Richardson said the Natural Resource Maintenance staff was removing a stand of silver
poplars between the dog park and Cuthbert Amphitheater, and pointed out the area on the map.
There had been willow planting along the entire length of the canal, the purpose of which was to
reduce canal water temperature by shading once the trees were grown.
