It was noted that Ms. Ferschweiler, Ms. Mello and Mr. Hughes had excused absences from the
October 13, 2011 meeting, and the minutes would be so corrected.
Ms. Brand, seconded by Mr. Sonnichsen, moved to approve the October 13, 2011
minutes with corrections. The motion passed unanimously.
5. Announcements and Points of Information
Ms. Lamb, Nearby Nature, said one of their staff attended Peck International in December 2011.
They hired a new education coordinator, whose background was in Marine Biology. Nearby
Nature's 20' anniversary party was scheduled for St. Patrick's Day from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00
p.m. and she invited those present to attend. A timeline and history of Nearby Nature's 20 years
would be presented.
Ms. Lamb said they were continuing restoration work with Network Charter School, Rachel
Carson, University of Oregon students, as well as community groups. They were also pulling ivy
and blackberries with students every other week and provided litter pickup. They were
anticipating 1500 students on field trips in the spring. They had support from EWEB and had
received a Staples Grant to fund scholarships. Wendy McKenzie, an instructor from Network
Charter School, with her students, saw a river otter and bald eagles near the Turtle Pond.
Ms. Lamb said they were applying for a Neighborhood Matching Grant from the City with the
Harlow Neighborhood Association. They want to put in wildflowers in the grassy area near the
Frohnmayer Footbridge that would not obstruct the bike path view. The grant would allow them
to purchase plants. Their focus would be working with groups and organizations in the Harlow
neighborhood. She said that area was presently unrepresented in their volunteer efforts. She
asked if anyone present would be willing to sign on as community supporters. She also asked if
anyone was willing to sign up for a work party and if anyone had community connections for
groups they could recruit for volunteer work parties. She passed around a form for sign up.
Mr. Sonnichsen asked the status of barking the Wildflower Hollow trail.
Ms. Lamb said that was suspended until they had approval from the CPC because Nearby Nature
would be responsible for it and not the City.
Mr. Sonnichsen said he and the Chair had discussed it informally and he believed the feeling was
to go ahead with the project.
Ms. Brand asked if they were talking about a particular area.
Ms. Lamb showed the group the area on the map being discussed, which was near Wildflower
Hollow. Two places were slippery slopes that were muddy and hazardous that they wanted to
mulch. It was a unique part of the riparian forest, which was why they adopted it. They want
people to walk through the area, not bike through it.
MINUTES -- Citizen Planning Committee for the January 12, 2012 Page 2
Whilamut Natural Area
