feet tall and would be divided to show pictures of two different Nobel Laureates with quotes from the
person relating to their peace work.
In response to a question from Mr. Biggs regarding how lighting would be incorporated into the
monument, Mr. Attig said noted that it had been suggested that the top of the pillars would hold solar
panels to collect light and power a low wattage bulb for lighting but he raised concern that this would be
vulnerable to vandals. Ms. Weiss noted that lighting was still a conceptual plan that needed to be refined.
Mr. Sonnichsen added that lighting was a controversial issue that still needed to be decided.
In response to a question from Mr. Biggs regarding how the site had been decided on, Mr. Attig said the
design committee had discussed possibilities with Parks and Open Space Director Johnny Medlin. He
said the chosen site had no Willamette Floodway issues. Ms. Weiss added that an area had to be chosen
that would not interfere with any future plans for the park. She stressed that in choosing the design of the
monument there needed to be an understanding of the park area and the Eugene Community.
Ms. Ullmann commended the project planning effort. She questioned whether native trees had been
considered in the design.
Ms. Weiss said plans were still conceptual and final decisions on plant materials have not been made..
Ms. Ullmann expressed her preference for native plants and trees to be used in the monument landscape
design. She also suggested using pervious materials for the path.
Mr. Fredette said pervious concrete had mixed results.
Mr. Attig stressed the desire for the monument to be something that our grandchildren could take their
grandchildren to see.
In response to a question from Mr. Rivernider regarding whether a playground was planned for the same
area, Ms. Weiss said the planned playground,(River Play), would be constructed across the parking lot
from the location of the monument.
Ms. Reddoor expressed her pleasure that educational curriculums would be planned around the
monument.
Mr. Attig said he was aware of a lack of knowledge about the issue and expressed his desire to see more
peace work in educational programs.
Ms. Ullmann thanked Mr. Attig for his presentation and suggested a letter of support from the Committee.
In response to a question from Mr. Sonnichsen regarding whether the group would not accept donations
from certain groups or would refuse corporate sponsorship, Mr. Attig said there were city policies against
corporate logos on monuments and remarked that such a thing would not happen in any event. He
remarked that the plan was for a peace park and not a ball park.
MINUTES — Whilamut Natural Area CPC Meeting July 14, 2005 Page 4
