Mr. Sonnichsen was uncertain of the intent of the third sentence on the top of page 6, as follows:
"He reviewed the list, which included renovation of the canoe canal, and adopted area for members,
the possibility of enhancing reptile habitat, erosion control on the canoe canal bank adjacent to Delta
Park, the removal of invasive species, installation of bird boxes, and enhancement of the oak savannah
habitat."
He did not know what was meant by `and adopted area.'
Mr. Ard recalled that CPC members had thought about adopting an area of the park.
Mr. Bonnett said he had brought this item up. He suggested that the wording be: "which included
renovation of the canoe canal, adoption of an area by CPC members...."
Mr. Sonnichsen remarked that the CPC had adopted the whole park.
Mr. Bonnett likened his intention to the suggestion for a reptile habitat improvement project.
Mr. Sonnichsen offered the following correction to the same sentence:
"...erosion control on the canoe canal bank adjacent to Delta P the dog park,..."
Mr. Fredette, seconded by Mr. Ernst moved to approve the minutes as amended. The mo-
tion passed unanimously.
5. Guest Presentation
Mr. Sonnichsen said he had helped to transplant camas bulbs at the Native Plant Nursery the previous
weekend and the experience had been "wonderful."
Ms. Baldwin provided a power point presentation on the work of the volunteers who contribute to the
Native Plant Nursery at Alton Baker Park and the Eugene Stream Team and the associated educational
components of the program. She noted that Mr. Taylor was her supervisor and Lauri Mullen served as
operations coordinator for the nursery. She explained that Wastewater Division Director, Peter Ruffier,
had originally suggested that four to five acres at the Wastewater Treatment Plan that were available at the
time be used to grow native plants. After several years of growing native plants at the Wastewater
Treatment Plant, the City decided to move the operation to Alton Baker Park near the community garden
area, which is where it is currently located. She said they collected seeds and salvaged native plants from
land that was being developed using an ad hoc group from a list of 230 volunteers. She listed some of the
groups that participated, which included students, church groups, business groups, and interested
individuals. She was very thankful for all the effort that was put into the nursery and welcomed CPC
volunteers to join in activities there.
Mr. Biggs asked if any madrones were planted. Ms. Baldwin replied that madrones grow at a higher
elevation. Mr. Taylor added that they tried not to compete with local nurseries. Mr. Fredette likened
madrone trees to problem children as they were difficult to transplant.
Mr. Sonnichsen noted that camas from the Native Plant nursery were to be planted at each of the Talking
Stones. He asked if this included the Talking Stones in Springfield. He noted that four Talking Stones
were located there. Mr. Taylor replied that camas could be provided for the Talking Stones in Springfield.
MINUTES— Citizen Planning Committee of the July 26, 2006 Page 2
Whilamut Natural Area
