existed in that area, and to consider Mr. Biggs' suggestion regarding the removal of the part of
the bicycle path that goes under the bridge. There were no objections to examination of the
suggestions.
b. Signage
Mr. Sonnichsen reported he met with other CPC members and Vicki Mallow, who he hoped
would become a member, to discuss two signage issues. One was Katherine Larson's idea to
install a temporary, portable, all- weather fabric sign over the north end of the Autzen Footbridge
that read "Welcome to the Whilamut Natural Area." It would also include information about the
use of trash containers and staying on the path. It would be seen by football game attendees and
taken up and put down as necessary. Another idea was for temporary signs discussing nesting
animals, particularly in the prairie area. Mr. Sonnichsen said that had been tried before but the
signs were vandalized. He proposed that volunteer Bill Brigman, a frequent park user, be asked
to put out and pick up signage informing people, particularly those with dogs, about the
consequences of their actions in the park.
e. Wildlife Habitat
Mr. Sonnichsen said that a camas planting occurred in November. He acknowledged Ms.
Baldwin's contribution to the planting. He said that several more stones remained to be planted.
He recalled that he and Mr. Ard had discussed Mr. Ard assuming the role of chair of the
subcommittee. Mr. Ard indicated his willingness to serve, although he suggested that others,
such as Mr. Peara or Ms. Blick, would also be appropriate.
Mr. Peara offered the assistance of a Nearby Nature staffer, Willie Hughes, to the subcommittee,
saying he was looking for projects.
Mr. Sonnichsen recalled that the subcommittee had gone through a walking tour the previous
spring that resulted in a priority project list. He recommended the list go out to the entire CPC.
d. UO Relations
Mr. Sonnichsen suggested the subcommittee name be changed to "Government Relations."
Mr. Sonnichsen said the subcommittee had not met with the UO to go over the results of the
crowd monitoring efforts but he anticipated such a meeting would occur soon.
Mr. Peara briefly provided some background on the park monitoring that occurred in conjunction
with activities in the parking lots near Autzen Stadium for the benefit of new members. He
anticipated that the City would enforce alcohol statutes on private lots next year, which could
reduce littering and urination in the park.
S.
