November 27, 2007
Pat Kilkenny
University of Oregon Athletic Director
Len Casanova Athletic Center
2727 Leo Harris Parkway
Eugene OR 97401
Dear Pat,
The City of Eugene is undertaking several projects in preparation for the Olympic Track and
Field Trials in 2008. One of these projects could be the replacement of the path lighting from
the south side of the Autzen Footbridge to Leo Harris Parkway.
A partnership between the University of Oregon, the City of Eugene, and Lane County to
operate and maintain the pedestrian path between Autzen Stadium and the University of
Oregon main campus dates back to 1974. This partnership was renewed in 1991, when the
University constructed a lighting system for the pathway and was solely responsible for its
maintenance and operation. In 1995, this partnership was extended when the City assumed
responsibility for maintenance of the lighting system. The University retained responsibility for
payment of the electrical service for the lighting system.
Sixteen years after the lighting was originally installed, the existing light poles and fixtures are
now in poor condition. The fiberglass poles make them especially vulnerable to vandalism,
and the light fixtures are not up to current code standards. By replacing the existing lights with
the City's current park standard, we can realize more efficient lighting of the path, easier
maintenance, and a much improved aesthetic experience along the path.
The lighting project is estimated to cost $150,000 and is on a short timeline to have the
improvements in place for the Olympic Trials. We have been able to put a funding package
together totaling $110,000. This includes both City funds and funding from the State
Legislature earmarked to support improvements associated with the Olympic trials.
A contribution of $40,000 from the University will help to make this project a reality. The
continued lighting of this major pedestrian corridor between the University Campus and
Autzen is certain to be a worthwhile investment. I hope you will consider this excellent
opportunity to pool our resources together to make these much needed improvements. Please
call me with any questions.
Sincerely,
Kurt Corey
Public Works Director
