5. Grass parking areas around Wistec. Significant amounts of trash were found in the grass
parking areas surrounding Wistec following early season games. The youth crews which
perform clean-up throughout the park are not contracted to cover these areas. Wistec staff are
responsible for this clean-up and typically perform it on Monday following game -day.
Instances when trash was found around the Wistec site was when the post -game clean-up had
not yet occurred.
Recommendation: The City of Eugene will work with Wistec staff to ensure a timely clean-up
of areas under their management.
6. BMX lease area. Significant amounts of trash were also found in the area which is leased to
Emerald Valley BMX ( EVBMX). EVBMX allows event parking and tailgaiting in their
leasehold area for a fee. The youth crews which perform clean-up throughout the park are
not contracted to cover this area.
Recommendation: The City of Eugene will work with EVBMX management to ensure a timely
clean-up of areas under their management.
IMPACTS TO VEGETATION
This category addresses areas where pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle traffic has traveled off of
paved surfaces, creating compacted soil conditions and or loss of vegetation. This becomes
increasingly problematic during or immediately following wet weather when the soil is most
vulnerable to compaction. Mitigation of these impacts is a high priority and should be in place
prior to the 2002 football season.
7. Main corridor path between the Autzen footbridge over the Willamette and Autzen
stadium. Due to a large volume of pedestrians on the path during peak travel times, areas
where the path narrows causing a choke point, and the presence of bicycles, there is a
tendency for the crowd to spill off of paved portion of the trail. Bicyclists attempting to
maneuver around pedestrians and riding off of the paved surface have been observed as
having the most negative impacts. There is a point along the main corridor where the path
narrows considerably due to a steeply sloped slough to the east and a vertical embankment
and protruding rock to the west. Both these natural barriers create a dilemma for addressing
the issues of public safety and minimizing park impacts.
Recommendation: The University of Oregon and City of Eugene have agreed to consult with a
specialist to provide recommendations to address the main path choke point. Options for the
entire corridor will be examined following recommendations from the consultant.
ABP Monitoring- 2001 Season Summary Page 3
