Not all the impacts summarized in this memo are the responsibility of the University of Oregon.
The City of Eugene, Wistec, and Emerald Valley BMX are also responsible for some mitigation
measures. Impacts and recommendations are organized by responsible party.
LITTER AND TRASH
Although post -game monitoring was conducted after the regularly scheduled park clean-up by
area youth crews, game related trash and litter was observed during each monitoring effort. The
individual's performing park monitoring typically picked up an additional 15 to 25 gallons of
litter from various areas within the park. Mitigation of these impacts is a medium priority and
should be in place prior to the 2002 football season.
1. North edge of Lots 8 and 9. It has been observed that trash accumulates along the north
edge of Lots 8 and 9, where it abuts Leo Harris Parkway, and also in the planted berm along
the west edge of Lot 8. It appears that much of this litter is blowing across Leo Harris
Parkway from the U of O lots.
Recommendation: The University will work to ensure a timely clean-up of U of O parking areas
which have the potential to affect the park.
2. Souvenir give -a -ways. It was noted that on game days when patrons were given souvenirs
such as plastic pom -poms, the amount of trash in the park was greater. Remnants of pom-
poms, which were difficult to pick -up were found throughout the park.
Recommendation: The University of Oregon has agreed to look into options such as bio-
degradable souvenirs, collection boxes at stadium exits, or enhanced clean-up following games
when souvenirs are given away.
3. Main corridor path between the Autzen footbridge over the Willamette and Autzen
stadium. This is the area of the park which receives the most pre and post -game pedestrian
traffic. The placement of additional trash receptacles and post game clean-up efforts have
been successful at reducing the level of trash along this path from previous years, however
significant amounts of litter remain.
4. Nature trails east of main path. Informal, unpaved paths spur off of the main path to
Autzen stadium. These paths go through areas that are recognized as high quality habitat
given the diversity of intact native vegetation. Although smaller amounts of trash are found
along these trails, residual traces do exist and are problematic given the sensitive nature of
the area.
Recommendation: The City of Eugene will work with collection crews to improve upon
existing work. While current collection efforts have been successful at cleaning up a great
majority of trash, there is still room for improvement. This involves a more thorough cleaning
along the main path and along the nature trail spurs.
ABP Monitoring- 2001 Season Summary Page 2
