Page -2-
around the country and around the globe. Pre's Trail represents Eugene as our
ambassador to the world.
In recent years, Pre's Trail has been better known around the world than in our own
community. Neglect and lack of funds had contributed to a growing obscurity in the
local area. We are changing this perception. As the trail work progresses local
recognition and use has significantly increased. Our vision to see Pre's Trail widely
used by our own community is being realized. Our aim is to make this a resource in
which we can all take pride.
That is where we are today. Community and civic involvement has greatly increased.
Where we go in the future is the purpose of this plan proposal.
Trail Specifications
Currently the Trail consists of 3 loops designated by color and connected by single
tracks. The running surface specifications is to an 8' wide trail. The trail bed is
prepared by minor excavation and covered with landscape cloth. Then a gravel bed of
various size open material is laid to provide drainage. This is covered by a layer of 3/4"
minus material to close the bed and capped with another layer of s/" minus to provide a
low crown for run -off drainage. A thin'/" lay of quarry sand is spread to insure
compaction. The edges of the trail are flush with the ground to prevent equipment
damage. The trail -bed is then covered with a 2 -3" layer of soft bark surface for running.
Goals and Funding
Goals of the project are 1) complete a restoration and upgrade of the entire length of the
trail and added amenities prior to the 2008 Olympics. (Refer to the trail map, work
schedule and action items). 2) provide for maintenance of the trail into the future. 3)
continue to partner with the Eugene Parks Department to complete the restoration and
to maintain the trail. 4) provide for the necessary funding for trail completion and
maintenance. 5) partner with the Eugene Parks Department to sponsor an annual
Labor day Pre's Trail Run/Waik Event.
Since it's inception in 1975, the maintenance of Pre's Trail has been primarily the
responsibility of OTC. This involved many thousands of hours of volunteer manpower
and tens of thousands of dollars in donations and club contributions.
Recently, Eugene Parks and Open Spaces has contributed significant resources of
equipment, manpower, and capital to assist OTC in the restoration. This serves to
reinforce the private /public partnership. Now, Eugene Parks and Open Spaces wants to
lead the restoration of the Steve Prefontaine Running Trail.
