MEMO
To: Bob Hammitt, Maintenance Director
From: Dick Morgan, Parks Maintenance Manager
Date: October 2, 1995
Subject: Delta Ponds Maintenance Costs
I am forwarding to you a summary of the maintenance and associated costs the Public Works
Department has provided to the Delta Ponds on an annual basis. I am also including some
information regarding volunteer efforts that have taken place at the ponds this past year.
Maintenance activity is relatively minimal, falling into the categories of inspection and
monitoring, debris & litter removal, vegetation management, project work, and the
support of volunteer efforts. In recent years Lane County and Looking Glass youth crews
and volunteer groups have contributed to the maintenance of the site in addition to the
efforts of City staff.
• A weekly or bi- weekly inspection of the area is a regular part of the maintenance effort.
Most are perimeter checks with an occasional walk - through on the existing trails.
Twenty -six to thirty staff hours a year are typically devoted to such inspections. Further
maintenance activity may be scheduled in response to what is found.
• Project work by City staff varies. An "average" year would likely involve three or four
projects with four to six hours of staff time devoted to each.
• An additional forty to eighty staff hours annually are devoted to the support of volunteer
efforts or the work of Lane County or Looking Glass youth crews. Work includes on -site
instruction, supervision, and inspection as well as the transportation of materials and
supplies used by these groups in the completion of their work.
• Vegetation management involves keeping trails and adjacent sidewalks free of
encroaching invasive vegetation, especially blackberries. In the last year, two hours of
mechanical control were completed at the site. All other activity was manual. Much of
this was done by the youth crews, above, in conjunction with trail maintenance efforts.
• About $1,000 worth of materials and supplies are used at the site in an average
operational year.
As to the type of project work undertaken at the site, the following were completed this year.
