FOR COUNCIL NEWSLETTER 10/1/93
UPDATE ON ASCOT PARK BALLFIELD LIGHTING
A public forum is being organized in response to complaints from neighbors on
the south side of Ascot Park over the ballfield lighting being installed. The
tentative date for the forum is October 12, 1993, 7:30 p.m. at either Monroe
Middle School or Sheldon Community Center. The contractor has been asked to
stop work at the Ascot site until after the public forum.
John Etter, Principal Landscape Architect with Public Works Maintenance, met
with 13 neighbors on 9/29 to record their specific concerns. Two short video
tapes provided by the manufacturer were shared with the group to explain the
superiority of the new lights in relation to older systems existing elsewhere
in the community.
The lack of opportunity for public comment and fears about the impact of light
spillage onto their property were universal concerns. A number of existing
operational issues and questions were also identified and are appropriate
-subjects to be discussed in a public forum. Among them are parking, traffic,
hours of use, restrooms, concessions, noise, lighting options, thefts and
vandalism. The neighbors are concerned that some of these problem areas will
be extended into the evening hours with the advent of the lights.
The forum should allow the neighbors and staff the opportunity to share their
concerns and explore the possibilities of modifications to the lighting system
or changes in how the fields are operated.
For more information, call John Etter or Johnny Medlin at 687 -5220.
