Sheldon H.S. Traffic Operations
It is recommended a sidewalk be constructed from the southeast corner of the school buildings
along the east property line to the east access. A sidewalk is needed to encourage pedestrian
travel around the perimeter of the parking area to destinations east of the campus. Students
currently cut through the access and parking areas as a specific pedestrian way is not available.
A pedestrian safety concern was identified at both site accesses. A significant number of students
crossed Willakenzie Road outside of delineated crosswalks, through intersections, and between
intersections creating hazardous conditions for themselves and motorists as well. Though this is
not a deficiency in the transportation system, as good pedestrian facilities exist on Willakenzie
Road, there may be a partial solution to the problem. It is estimated one third of the students
crossing Willakenzie Road are traveling to the LTD bus stop on the south side of the street.
Contact should be made with LTD planning staff to discuss reversing the bus route and placing a
bus stop on the north side of Willakenzie Road near the school. This change and increased
enforcement in the area may reduce the risk accidents in the school vicinity.
•
Branch Engineering - Page 6
