This site has tremendous natural resources and open
space recreation opportunities in one of Oregon's major metropolitan areas.
Northwest Youth Corps is a nonprofit youth development, job training, employment, and organization
serving more than 8,000 culturally and economically diverse youth since 1984. NYC has a long history
of working with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, and you may be aware of our commitment
to conservation of wildlife habitat, historical and cultural site preservation, recreational area development,
trail improvements, soil conservation work, watershed enhancement projects, enhancement of state parks,
and other projects. We support the City of Eugene's desire to own the natural stream channel through this
area for water quality benefits which would not be provided if the site develops into urban housing.
The continuing growth of population centers in western Oregon has had a negative impact on the overall
habitat of many species. Eugene's plan works to safeguard these species and the lands on which they
depend for survival. Your strategic investment in this project will improve conditions for maintaining
viable populations of native plants and animals, while meeting public demand for wildlife viewing and
appreciation through development of pedestrian and mountain being trails through this site that would
link with several miles of existing Ridgeline Trail System in Eugene's south hills.
Northwest Youth Corps can testify to the City's past commitment to benefiting youth, community, and
the natural environment, by using local youth to build, maintain and repair trails and recreational
facilities. Their dedication to providing recreational opportunities for Eugene area citizens is
commendable, and in the past has been in accord with identified needs, community priorities, goals, and
outcomes.
We would like to see this site managed for its natural open space and recreation benefits. It is with great
sincerity that we encourage you to fund the proposal to acquire this parcel by the City of Eugene.
Respectfully,
kale
Development Director
`
OutDoor School • YouthCorps Programs • YouthWorks • 2621 Augusta Street • Eugene.
