The site
has tremendous natural resources and offers open space recreation opportunities in one of
Oregon's major metropolitan areas.
The Nature Conservancy and the City of Eugene have been active partners in protecting
natural and recreational areas in the Eugene area since the late 1970s. The City of
Eugene has been an exemplary partner and their longstanding commitment to recreation
and protection of natural resources is inspiring. The City of Eugene has shown consistent
commitment to partnership with nonprofits, state and federal agencies.. Because of their
• commitment we believe they are highly qualified recipients of a grant from Oregon Parks
and Recreation to acquire the East Fork Amazon Headwaters site. The site has been the
highest priority in the City's inventory of natural resources and there is a current, limited
opportunity to acquire the property before it is lost to extensive residential development.
Protection of the property through public ownership will offer on -site recreation benefits,
the potential to expand the trail system and benefits to water quality.
In closing, we urge you to fund the City of Eugene's proposal to acquire the East Fork
Amazon Headwaters.
Sincerely,
/s/
Brenda J. Brown
Director of Protection
