•
October 27 1992 E U G E N E ``
Mike Gleason, City Manager
City of Eugene
777 Pearl St.
Eugene, OR 97401
Dear Mike,
City Public Works and Parks employees have assisted with
the Community Christmas Tree downtown for the past four years.
Their involvement has been critical because of the knowledge they
have and because the donation of their time has kept the project
affordable and, therefore, possible. I received a letter from Bob
Hammitt dated October 19 in which he says City resources will no
- -- --longer be- available -due, in -part, to the Eugene Decisions process. - - - On behalf of DEI, downtown businesses and the community I
ask you to please find a way to make the same level of City
assistance available, at least this year. What this means
specifically is a tree crew to cut the tree, a crane from the
Wastewater Treatment Plant to lift the tree on a truck and set it
in the mall, one or two Mall maintenance personnel to help string
the lights and then a similar effort to remove the tree. DEI will
continue to contribute replacement bulbs for the lights ($400- $500),
an electrician to wire the lights ($600 - $800), a flat bed truck to
transport the tree and production of the Tree Lighting Ceremony.
This will be the Fifth Annual Tree Lighting since DEI brought
back the tradition of a big downtown tree. The tree has become
a symbol of the downtown holiday season and a benefit to the
whole community. City assistance has been essential and really
a pretty small investment for the resulting benefit. If we must
do things differently in the future, I can accept that. But give me
twelve months to figure out what I'm going to do next year
instead of thirty days to figure out what do to this year. Please
try to help us out on this one.
I hope that something can be worked out. Downtown is
making real progress and I'm concerned that not having something
as symbolic as a Christmas tree may set back that progress. Please
have someone contact me as soon as possible so I can finalize things
one way or the other. Thanks Mike.
Si e .del'.
F ss Brink
cc: Chris Anderson
Abe Farkas
(503) 343 -111 1' ! 10 ?04 ruye ni Oregnn (1/110
