DOES D 0 ENGINEERING SERVICES
DKKOwEN Quality Engineering for the Client at an Economical Price
P.O. Box 1479, ALBAN', OREGON 97321
Phone & Fax [541] 926 -5173 Car #1 979 -9128 Car #2 979 -4161
January 23, 1997
Mayor Jim Torrey
City of Eugene
777 Pearl street, Room 105
Eugene, Oregon 97401
Re: George Ernest Owen Memorial ROSE GARDEN
To: Mayor Jim Torrey and the City Council Members
I am the only child of George Owen. On behave of our family (my
8 children and 12 grandchildren) I wish to take this opportunity
to commend The City of Eugene and their Public Works Dept. for
the superb job they have done in developing and maintaining the
Rose Garden.
When George Owen was on the City Council we donated the land with
the vision that it would be a Rose Garden that the City of Eugene
would be very proud of. I am certainly proud of the City.
I have received many compliment on how the City of Eugene has
made the Rose Garden such a beautiful place to visit, walk, bike
and even to get married under the cherry tree.
Yesterday I visited the Garden and talked to Dee. His crew was
very busy pruning the bushes and sprucing up the grounds. They
are doing a wonderful job.
On March 27, 1951, (George Owen's birthday) George and Enid moved
into their new home, which is now part of the Rose Garden. I
have many good memories of times spent in this home.
The house is now a eye soar to the beautiful Garden and I am
hoping that you will proceed with your plans to remove it as soon
as possible. Enid visited Garden shortly before her death.
I hope the Council realizes what a beautiful asset the city has
in this Rose Garden. People from Eugene, Oregon and the nation
visit and enjoy "SMELLING THE ROSES ".
With deep respect to the Mayor and Council of the City of Eugene.
Respectfully,
Richard E.
