8. Lack of structure & Permanent Home for the Minature & Climbing Minature Rose collection.
The climbing Minature Roses have been without structures to climb on for the past 3 years
due to the destruction of the old house. It used to be a very charming part of the garden as
it was the rock garden that surrounded the house with a partition of climbing minatures
separating this section from the rest of the garden. These partitions created a sense of
mystery to the garden since it was an "outdoor enclosed room" to chance upon. Currently,
there is no DP for the Minatures & Climbing Minatures Roses.
9. Concern that all of the new landscape features of the DP are located in the already small
Heirloom Garden. Why aren't they evenly distributed throughout the entire garden to
add more interest, surprise, & wonder to the garden?
10. Concern that the location chosen for the Gazebo is perhaps, not the best location; especially
if the city is going to lease the Gazebo for weddings. The primary reason for this is that the
most colorful roses & roses in most continuous blooms for the longest period of time are
located in the Modern Roses section. It is my belief, that the Gazebo should be placed in the
central lawn area where it can be surrounded by the colorful, always blooming Hybrid Teas.
This would also serve as the natural focal point to the just completed, covered pergola.
Can't you just picture wedding parties entering through the pergola & ending their march to
the Gazebo? Also, there is more room on the Central Lawn for chairs, etc. needed by the
wedding party and the roses in the Modern Section are not rare and are more hardy than
a lot of the old garden roses.
11. The Planting Grids in the DP in front of the Rambling Roses & roses that surround the
Southwestern section of Heirloom Roses are impractible & too small for the needs & habits
of Heirloom Roses. Better to scrap this aspect of the plan and to include, instead, the
Groupings of the Roses that have been dislocated by the new hard structures like the
Bourbons, Centifolias, the Hybrid Musks, the Tea Roses, etc.
12. Character of Garden remains a charming, old - fashioned, romantic rose garden. All of the
new structures should be in this style since that is the style historically established here.
(Example: Heart- shaped wall divider of climbing Modern Roses.)
