ORG Development Plan Issues
June 5, 2001
By Peggy Fisher
1. Heirloom Rose Rosarian should be consulting & advising the city on the DP to assist
city on the complexities, issues, trends, etc. of growing Heirloom Roses.
2. Planting of modern rose `America' (HT intro. 1976)on the pergola in the Heirloom Rose
section instead of legitimate Heirloom varieties that have already been ordered (order is
partially in).
3. Not enough advance warning for clearing & preparing site for pergola & to relocate
several hundred plants. Consequently, 10% of collection in that area is lost; significant
amount of others not identified which creates identification nightmares down the road &
hampers public's ability to study & appreciate collection. Also, potentially decreases
value of collection.* (See #4)
4. No area listed in DP for the permanent home of the Tea Roses.
(Pergola installation displaced the entire collection of Tea Roses. ORG had a fairly large &
established collection which made it one of the more significant collections. Currently, there
is no written plan, nor has their "new home" been identified. Sadly, some Tea varieties that
are now lost, may be irreplaceable due to lack of availability. Note: Tea Roses need space, as
they are large shrubs growing 10' -15' wide.)
5. Great concern over some of the older, established plants such as the species "Hilleryi' in
the Sassafras section. Some rosarians I interviewed, especially Greg Lowery of Vintage
Gardens, said relocation could kill these older plants as oftentimes, the old plants don't
regenerate well. If they are moved, it's especially critical that they are moved during
their dormant period of growth & that propagation of these varieties are already successful
in case replacement is needed.
6. No Permanent Homes for Relocated Groups of Roses that either are already or will be
displaced by the Plan.
7. Mixture of Modern Roses with Heirloom Rose section. (See Grid Beds of DP)
This seems unwarranted as the Modern Rose section already takes -up the majority
of the rose garden. Plus, it's usually not done for many reasons...including the fact,
the needs & requirements of these varieties vary tremendously; and the habits of
some old roses just don't work for Hybrid Teas.
