April 17, 2009
Field Visit to the West Eugene Wetlands
10:30 -AM -1:30 PM
Participants:
Mike Haske, Deputy State Director for Resources Planning, Use, and Protection
Kim Titus, Branch Chief Planning Science and Resource Information Support
Mark Brown, Partnership Coordinator
Virginia Grilley, Eugene District Manager
William Hatton, Siuslaw Field Manager
Patricia K. Johnston, West Eugene Wetlands Project Manager
Purpose of the meeting:
1. To get a firsthand look at the West Eugene Wetlands, on the ground.
2. To get a better understand of the issues faced by the BLM with land management,
collaborative work through the WEW Partnership, community and partner
expectations of the Bureau of Land Management within the WEW Project.
3. Discuss which options need to be further or fully developed as the team explores
Sustainable Management Strategy for the West Eugene Wetlands.
Agenda:
The meeting was a combination of a meeting at the West Eugene Wetlands Partnership office
at 751 South Danebo and site visits to:
1. Willow Corner, a 2003 Cooperative Conservation Initiative Project
2. Stewart Pond, BLM Recreation Site /Watchable Wildlife (and a walk around the area)
The meeting concluded at the WEW Partnership office with a debrief and discussion of next
steps.
Shared Understandings:
1. "To do the right thing," no matter what BLM management decides with regard to the
final disposition of the federally- administered portion of the WEW Project. "The right
thing" is taking appropriate steps to implement the final decision in such a way that
BLM's presence or absence in the project does not cripple the success of the WEW
partnership /partners nor jeopardize the federally managed lands or resources
purchased with LWCF funding.
2. One option of the many options being considered is an internal funding solution. This
still viable and should not yet be eliminated. BLM is NOT yet prepared to disengage in
the WEW. This option clearly will need state office help and support. (i.e. discussions
Field Visit April 17, 2009 — Page 1 - -- —
