E UGENE Public Works
Maintenance
City of Eugene
1820 Roosevelt Boulevard
Eugene, Oregon 97402
(541) 687 -5220
(541) 683 -6883 FAX
September 6, 1996
Dear Scobert Park Neighbor:
In response to community concerns about crime problems and landscape damage, Scobert Park
will be closed from September 9, 1996, to December 1, 1996. Signs will be posted informing
residents and visitors that the park is closed to all uses between September 9 and December 1.
(Limited access will be allowed to the community garden adjacent to Scobert Park.)
Closing the park for approximately three months will give the trampled park landscaping a
chance to recover. During the closure, Public Works crews will continue to irrigate and mow the
park, and some minor repairs will be made to aid in the recovery of the landscaping.
Additionally, the closure will give community members an opportunity to work on both short-
and long -term solutions to help share the future use of the park. The Scobert Park task team, a
group of neighbors interested in park issues, will notify interested parties of meetings and other
opportunities to comment on proposed solutions.
Closing the park, even temporarily, has not been an easy decision. I very much appreciate the
feedback and support provided by the neighbors of the park and by the Whiteaker Community
Council. We will continue to work together to find ways to revitalize this park for the benefit of
the entire community.
In the meantime, police are aware of the closure and will be taking appropriate enforcement
action. If you would like more information about the temporary closure of Scobert Park, please
contact the Eugene Public Works Maintenance Division at 687 -5220.
Sincerely,
Dick Morgan, Parks Maintenance Manager
Eugene Public Works Department
