S CCN Page 1
Temporary Closure of Scobert Park
An administrative order to temporarily close Scobert Park from September 9 through December 1, 1996, is
being prepared by staff. This action is the result of a neighborhood petition signed by more than 60
residents and supported by the Whiteaker Community Council's executive board, requesting the City to
temporarily close the park. Two neighborhood meetings held in August in Scobert Park failed to provide a
community consensus regarding an ideal solution, although most of the people attending the meetings
agreed that the park has problems that must be addressed and a short-term closure would provide some relief
while they work on future solutions. Council officers (Laue, Swanson - Gribskov), Ward 7 Councilor Shawn
Boles, and Ward 7 Councilor -elect Scott Meisner have been contacted by staff and are willing to support the
recommendations of the neighborhood.
The temporary closure of Scobert park will provide park neighbors with relief from the current level of
illegal activities and will allow park vegetation to begin to recover from abuse. The closure also gives
neighborhood members an opportunity to work on short- and long -term solutions to help shape the future
use of the park. Signs will be posted at the park announcing the closure, and a letter will be sent to park
neighbors. For further information, contact Public Works Director Christine Andersen at 687 -5241 or Park
Operations Manager Dick Morgan at 465 -2683.
