9. Provide plaques with information on the plants and trees in the park.
There is currently no on -going funding available to provide and maintain plaques for the many
varied plantings in Scobert Park. City staff are available to identify plants should the
neighborhood wish to proceed with this as a volunteer project. Please keep in mind that our past
experience with these types of plaques is that they receive a high rate of vandalism. If the
neighborhood chooses to initiate this volunteer project, the maintenance and replacement
responsibility would belong to the neighborhood.
City staff will research and produce a bilingual map of the plantings to be placed on the bulletin
board mentioned in recommendation number seven.
10. Encourage support organizations such as local garden clubs, youth clubs, or a new
"Friends of Scobert Park" group to adopt the park for funding, volunteering, and
maintenance.
We feel this is an essential factor in implementing these solutions to help fix the problems
Scobert Park is faced with. Through a cooperative neighborhood effort Scobert Park can flourish
as an open and friendly park that serves the needs of the Whiteaker/Blair neighborhood. Along
with strong neighborhood ownership will come the respect that this park requires. This effort
would strengthen the bond that has formed to step forward with positive change for the park and
the entire community.
11. Change the park name to "Scobert Garden" to change people's attitude toward the space
and reinforce the park's intended use as a quiet, garden -like area.
This change is relatively easy. The committee chose to retain the Scobert name, which makes
the Historical review process much simpler. This request to officially change the name of
Scobert Park to Scobert Garden will be forwarded to the City Council for action.
There are currently no on -going resources available to replace the Scobert Park sign to reflect the
name change. A sign of sufficient quality would cost approximately $2,000. The current sign
was funded by CDBG funds, made by a local artist, and put in place through a volunteer effort.
This would be an excellent volunteer opportunity for the neighborhood group.
12. Improve the lighting at night.
Recent prunings were completed in an attempt to improve the lighting in the park. Staff will
investigate additional possibilities for improvement, including adding a motion detecting light on
an existing pole at the south east corner of the park.
3
