The discussion focused on two broad areas: the Santa Clara Elementary School Site and parkland for a community
park in Santa Clara.
We began with the most immediate issue Santa Clara Elementary School (SCE). 6eorge told the group that the school was being "demolished as
we speak". The district had the property for sale for $7.15 million in anticipation of the zoning change to (-1, but the bidden had extensive
contingencies that prompted the district to pull the site from the market. The school board's goal is to complete the demolition by early
february, await the conclusion of the Commercial lands Inventory, apply for a zoning change of four of the six parcels from Pt to ( -1 or R-2,
and put the property back on the market for sale. Estimated time this will take is about a year. BRIM6 Recycling is collecting and giving
away /selling the building's bricks. The playground equipment and covered structured will remain for the time bring. The site is 7.2 acres and
fronts River Road.
X(SPOS would like to see the site remain zoned PL They feel the site is "the heart of the community" and needs to be dedicated for community
rather than commercial use. A central site is important to the community's identity. A question was asked about residential use of the land, but
apparently density is an issue and likelihood of residential use of the land is slim. This site could be developed as a neighborhood park, an urban
park, a potential PICA could be sited here, a community-run community center could be sited here. Public- private collaboration is a possibility.
The City is clear that they cannot manage a new community center at the present time. Dave Perez offered that the T could look at managing
the operation of a recreationaVcommunity center facility. The SC site is large enough. Dave indicated that while he is open to exploring the
idea with the community, he probably couldn't do new recreation centers at both Santa Clara and Bethel. His organization would have to weigh
the diffe mt opportunities.
