MEMORANDUM
To: Michelle Lang
Child Care Inc.
From: Vena Jensen Wright
Child Care Resource Connection / Lane Community College
Date: December 6, 1994
Re: Identified Gaps in Child Care
As the designated child care resource and referral agency for Lane County, Child Care Resource
Connection is responsible to identify gaps in the child care delivery system in our area. The
identified needs for child care, based on requests and supply in particular areas, are as follows:
1. Infant- Toddler Care
2. Child Care during non - traditional hours
3. Care in Central Eugene: Whiteaker area, close proximity to downtown Eugene
4. Care in rural areas.
Family's needs for child care can be complex. Many families that are struggling with child care
issues have multiple complications which intensifies the desperation they experience in relation to
their care needs. Many parents cannot adequately afford child care, child care availability is
especially limited for very young children (infants and toddlers), and many families have varying
schedules which requires them to seek part-time or varying shift child care. This can be hard to
locate since it is diffucult for child care providers to offer part-time or varying shifts due to
scheduling needs.
In particular, the Whiteaker area needs all types of child care; many parents in this area are
unable to locate quality child care that is accessible and affordable. From my position here at
CCRC as Parent Consultant (I speak with many parents every day), my perception is that there is
a real need for additional qualtiy child care in the Whiteaker area, especially for infants and
toddlers. I know that many parents are unable to afford the child care they need; your scholarship
program is vital to these parents and I am confident there are many additional families that could
benefit from scholarships and subsidies to help them pay for child care.
I have enclosed some statistical information that may be helpful to you in writing your proposal.
Fccl free to call me with any questions you might have.
Good luck on your project - I appreciate your program and your work!
