Child Care Inc. Proposal for Eugene City Council - 6
Our Board is confident we would be successful in constructing a
building that would well meet the child care needs of the
community. We have an architect, Russ Mecredy, and contractor,
Steve Gunn, both with exceptional skills in their fields, serving
on our Facilities Committee (resumes enclosed). They also have
an understanding of the importance of a quality child care
program. Both Russ and Steve have children who attended Child
Care Inc. about ten years ago and have returned to donate their
expertise and skills to the benefit of Child Care Inc. and the
community.
Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), an organization that
includes architects, contractors, and suppliers, is currently
interested in being involved in a community related project. CSI
has expressed a strong interest in our project, which they will
be reviewing at their next Board meeting.
The basic cost of construction of the proposed building has been
estimated by our Facilities Committee at $75 /per square foot.
Based on preliminary drawings, which are for a residential -style
facility, we anticipate a cost of approximately $370,000 for
building. Greg Vik, of Vik Construction, who was involved in the
recent construction of the Lane County Relief Nursery facility,
feels our estimates are in line with current construction costs.
Our estimates have incorporated a built -in contingency of 10a and
5% inflation factors, since it would be approximately 15 months
before construction would begin.
Grant applications to such sources as the Community Development
Block Grant, Meyer Memorial Trust, Oregon Community Foundation,
The Barker Foundation, and the W.T. Grant Foundation, are
currently being researched. Several of these foundations have
been supportive of our program in the past. We feel strongly
that showing ownership of the site would greatly increase our
ability to secure funding from these sources, as well as lending
credibility to our community fundraising efforts.
Our Board has a consultant available to them who would maximize
our ability to conduct an effective capital fundraising campaign
for this project. Networking is already underway with other
agencies and individuals in the community that have been through
capital campaigns. We also have a demonstrated ability to obtain
assistance from such community organizations as the Eugene Active
20 -30 Club, Soroptomists International of Eugene, and the Junior
League of Eugene.
Given a concerted effort at capital fundraising during the next
15 months, and a major Community Development Block Grant, Child
Care Inc. would anticipate breaking ground in June of 1996.
Quality child care is vital to the state of our economy as well
as the future of our children.
Dec. 9, 1994
