r.4
i+ '
• , June 27, 2001
CHILD Mayor Jim Torrey
CAKE Council Members
I N C
Since 1968
Dear Mr. Torrey and members of the council,
High Quality Child Care:
Affordable and Accessible We wanted to take this opportunity to update you on the progress of our
for All Families project and to request that you reaffirm the city's commitment for the donation
Board: of the land at 118/119 Thomason Lane. I understand this issue is coming before
Kathy W'l r
Pre sident the council on the consent calendar for your July 9 meeting.
President
Debra Delegato
Vice President This land was originally donated in 1995 with the understanding that we
Paul Theisen would vacate our current city -owned site within five years. Since that time we
Treasurer have obtained a Conditional Use Permit (a process we had to go through twice)
Cheri Peterson for the site, contracts for the land transfer and parking lot, acquired our architect
Secretary and general contractor, and completed the architectural drawings, all a process
Mike Garling taking the first several years.
Greg Gerot
Bill Hoffman Unfortunately it has taken three years to complete the building permit
Susan Williams process for this project. Our first set of drawings for the building had to be
Cam Committee: substantially revised by our architect when the city staff learned that the
Debra Delegato, chair occupancy code for the infant /toddler section was being interpreted differently
McCabe Investments by the state. After the revised drawings were submitted it was then learned that
Bill McCabe, chair
McCabe Investments there were serious water issues on the donated site. The water flow test for the
Micheal Roberts site came in extremely low and for some time jeopardized the possibility of even
Gale Roberts Co.. Inc. being able to build on that site. The City, EWEB, CSI, NAWIC, and others
Lynn Daniels Anderson worked together to help resolve the code changes and interpretations as well as
Community Volunteer
the water flow issues, which have caused the project to extend beyond its
Diane Dugan
Community Volunteer original timeline. We received building permits in October of 2000 after this
Steve Gunn three -year process.
Construction Focus
Paul Theisen We would have met our original timeline if the building permit process
2G Construction
Robin Langkamp had been completed within a typical timeline. We've met the city's
Sehopfs Twin Oaks BIbs.Supply requirements in all other areas and are asking that the council reaffirm the
Greg Gerot agreements made between the City and Child Care Inc. in 1995.
Edward Jones
Bill Northwest Retirem We have met the requirements set by the City to reach 80% of our
Mike Garling construction funding before groundbreaking. The funds we have raised to date
Porker &Easrslde Elementary are $472,950.22. This includes the projected in -kind donations from our
Executive Directors: construction community and the Meyer Memorial Trust $100,000.00 grant that
Michelle Lang will be released after we begin construction. The total construction budget is
Diane Schultz
$533,226.67.
169 North Washington St.
Eugene, Oregon 97401
Telephone:
(541) 344-1165
e-mail: cchildcareink @aol.com
