DIRECTORS:
As you know, Child Care Inc. has occupied a city -owned house in West Skinner Jana Kenna
Butte Park for many years. During that time, the City has been generous in its President
support for our nonprofit child care center, which provides full -time quality child
care on a sliding scale, serving primarily low- income families. Debra Dekgato
Vice President
Last summer, we were in the process of negotiating a new agreement with the Karen Madeira
City, but it was never completed after a city evaluation of the condition of our Secretary
building determined that it would cost more than 5140,000 to bring it into
compliance with current safety code requirements and the provisions of the Maid& Below
ADA. Treasurer
Cindy Wig
Given that evaluation and an examination by Mr. Chris Shoap on whether and Charlene Larison
how it could be moved to a new site, we have decided not to attempt to Mary McCoy
relocate our current building. The building would have to be moved in at least Maj Seesa Green
three pieces and would require prohibitive expense to bring up to an acceptable
level of safety and accessibility. Further, we would be unable to stay open
during the time it was getting "hooked up" and reconstructed at the new site.
Therefore, we have decided to apply for Community Development Block Grant
money to build a new facility, which would also allow us to add an infant/ -
toddler program to our quality preschool program. Proximity to the west end of
Jacobs Park would also enhance our summer school -age program.
The current Board of Directors were informed on November 24 by John Etter of
Park Planning, Public Works Maintenance of a lot on Thomason Lane (Map # 17
04 25 13, Lots 700 and 800) adjoining the parking lot in Maurie Jacobs Park
that has been designated as a relocation site for us. We have examined this
site and the area surrounding it, and are enthusiastic about the prospect of
building and/or moving a new facility there. Its size (174.5 x 156 ft), location
in the Whiteaker neighborhood, and proximity to the bike path, bus transporta-
tion, and to Myra's Playground (and the soccer field) make it particularly attrac-
tive.
On December 13, Diane Schultz, Program Director, Mary McCoy (Chair of the
Facilities Committee of our Board of Directors) and 1 met in the Public Works
office with Mr. Etter and others of his staff. We were received cordially, given
